Counseling in Sedona, Arizona

Therapy that makes room for your tradition

For adults of any faith, many faiths or none. You bring what you believe and what you question. Your counselor is licensed, and this is therapy, not spiritual direction.

Is this a fit?

This is therapy, not spiritual direction

Both can matter in a life. Kizzy is a licensed counselor, and her work with you is counseling. A guide from your own tradition is a good thing to have alongside.

How faith fits in

Bring your own tradition, or none at all

Some people arrive with a congregation, a sangha, a circle or a practice of their own. Others have left one, are between several, or never had one. All of it is welcome here, and none of it is required.

  • Your words

Use the language that is yours: God, spirit, the universe, community, ancestors, or none of those.

  • Questions allowed

Doubt, anger and change are part of faith for many people. Bring them without being corrected.

  • Your own guide stays yours

Counseling does not replace your clergy, teacher or elder. With your written permission, Kizzy can talk with them.

  • No pitch, no conversion

She does not teach a religion, recruit, or ask you to take one on.

How it works

From a first message to a steady rhythm

  • 01

    A short call about fit

If you are not sure yet, book a 15-minute call. It is a conversation about whether we suit each other: it is not therapy, an evaluation or an assessment.

  • 02

A first session of 50 minutes

You talk about what you hope for and what you want Kizzy to know about your background. She explains confidentiality, and the two of you decide together whether to continue.

  • 03

    A rhythm that suits you

Most people meet weekly or every other week at first. Kizzy sets the pace with you, and there is no set number of sessions.

  • 04

    Your fee, in writing, first

Before the first session you receive your fee and a Good Faith Estimate in writing. Nothing is a surprise.

Licensed Professional Counselor

Kizzy sees adults in Sedona and by video. She grew up between traditions, and she has sat with people of many faiths and none.

Her counseling draws on person-centered, mindfulness-informed and cognitive behavioral approaches. She keeps her own beliefs out of the room, listens for the words that are yours, and is clear that the work is counseling.

How fees work

The answers to what nearly everyone asks before a first session.

  • Insurance we work with

Juniper Door Counseling is out of network with insurance plans, so you pay for each session yourself. We do not take Medicare or Medicaid. If you would like a counselor who bills your plan, we will gladly share the names of colleagues.

    • Out of network with insurance plans

    • No Medicare or Medicaid

  • If you pay yourself

You pay at the end of each session by card, including HSA and FSA cards. There is no contract and no payment in advance. The fee depends on the kind of session and how long it runs: 50 minutes for an individual session and 80 for a couple. Your fee is given to you in writing before you start. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are open; ask how to request one. We ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

Each month we give you an itemized receipt (a superbill) with the dates and kind of session, to send to your plan, which may reimburse part of out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see. Your plan decides whether it pays anything; ask it before you start.

  • An estimate in advance

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written Good Faith Estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We give you one before the first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

  • Checking your benefits

We do not check benefits, because we do not bill your plan. If you want to know whether your plan reimburses, call it before the first session and ask about out-of-network mental health services.

The office

In person in Sedona, or by video

We see people by appointment, Tuesday to Saturday. Kizzy is licensed in Arizona, so video sessions are for people physically in Arizona.

Questions people ask first

Do you take my insurance?

No. Juniper Door Counseling is out of network with insurance plans, and we do not take Medicare or Medicaid. You pay for each session yourself, and we give you a monthly receipt you can send to your plan. If you want someone who bills your plan, we will share the names of colleagues.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We give you one before the first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

What happens in the first session?

You and Kizzy talk for 50 minutes about what brought you to look for counseling, what you hope for and what you want her to know about your background, including any tradition. She explains how confidentiality works, and the two of you decide together whether to continue.

Do I need to be religious?

No. People come with a faith, with several, with questions, or with none. You do not need to believe anything, and you will not be asked to.

Will you pray with me, or teach me a practice?

No. Kizzy is a licensed counselor, and the work is counseling, not worship or spiritual direction. If a practice from your own tradition helps you, you can talk about it, and she will help you think about how it fits your life.

What do I do in a crisis?
